Eco Ninjas achieve the Sustainability Winner award for the north west

Embracing Sustainability

We were kindly invited to attend the Northwest Coast Research and Innovation Awards 2022 at Edge Hill University. Liverpool University Hospital asked us to go along due to working so closely with them in implementing our embroidered theatre caps and I am delighted to say that this project won the Sustainability award 2022.

Education for theatres

We have created an Education for Theatres section, which will be regularly updated with valuable information. This resource covers key topics including:

  • The history and evolution of operating theatre practices

  • The shift to disposable solutions in healthcare settings

  • The benefits of switching to disposable theatre badge hats

  • How these hats will be implemented in operating theatres

Our goal is to provide insights that support informed decisions and improve practices within healthcare environments.

New habits

Making this sustainable change away from disposable theatre hats to reusable will require a new habit to be built. Staff removing their badges from their hats at the end of each shift, cleaning and storing them away until they use it again, will soon become an automatic response, just like the way staff take their disposable hats off and put them into the bin each day.

Leading the change away from disposable products

Eco Ninjas Ltd are leading the way by helping hospital theatres transition from disposable theatre caps to reusable “name and role” quality fabric hats.

Not only do they enhance patient safety and reduce patients’ anxiety, but they also improve communication significantly during operations as everyone can quickly connect and identify easily with others.

The number of disposable hats sent to landfill is approximately 4 every second. In 2023 we estimated that a minimum of 110,557,119 (one-hundred-and-ten million) disposable hats ended up in landfill.

Our new fully inclusive inclusive range of Badge Hats can be worn by everyone, all cultures, and religions as well all stages of roles from Students to Surgeons!

The effects

The theatre environment is a complex one where we interact with different team members all the time, all of whom work towards one goal: “Patient safety and the provision of safe patient care.”

"The use of reusable named theatre caps with roles on, enables better communication to provide this and since our Anaesthetists have been wearing their own caps, they have noticed an improvement in this."

The benefits

As Eco Ninjas, we believe in the benefits of our Theatre badge hats. Our hats not only improve patient safety by ensuring that surgical staff have clear visibility and are easily identifiable, they also improve staff morale, giving them a sense of pride in their work and team.  Reduce mistakes, Less waste to landfill, Can be centrally laundered.

Laundering

Laundering surgical clothing at home is not recommended, as it may not meet the necessary cleanliness and sterility standards required for healthcare settings. This is why staff do not take scrubs home to wash. Hospitals that already use Elis as their laundry provider for surgical scrubs can also rely on them to launder theatre badge hats, ensuring proper hygiene and compliance with healthcare protocols.
