Embracing Sustainability in Healthcare: The Change to Reusable Surgical Caps
In the pursuit of greener healthcare practices, trauma orthopaedics at Somerset has taken a significant step towards sustainability — replacing single-use surgical caps with reusable alternatives. This move aligns with the NHS Green Plan and brings substantial cost and environmental benefits, while also enhancing communication for patients and staff.
The Power of Change Across Healthcare Trusts
This impactful initiative is not limited to just one hospital. All healthcare trusts can adopt this change and reap the many benefits it brings — advancing sustainability, improving patient care, and enhancing operational efficiency.
Cost Efficiency Over Three Years
Previously, orthopaedic theatres (three in total) used 19,550 disposable caps per year. By transitioning to 424 reusable caps and 84 name badges, the department significantly reduced expenses:
- Disposable caps cost: £8,211 over three years.
- Reusable caps cost: £4,342.60 over three years (including name badges).
- Total savings: £3,868.40.
These figures are conservative — reusable caps have proven to last far beyond initial estimates. Our very first customer, Dr Diwan, still wears her reusable hats from 2021, more than four years later. This longevity means the financial savings and CO₂ reductions identified are likely underestimated.
Environmental Impact
The carbon footprint of reusable caps is initially higher but significantly lower over time:
- Annual carbon emissions from single-use caps: 2,688.1 kg CO₂e.
- Annual emissions from reusable caps: 975.2 kg CO₂e.
- Total carbon saved per year: 1,712.9 kg CO₂e.
Reusable caps reach their carbon break-even point after just 18 washes — meaning every subsequent use results in net environmental savings. These figures are based on a small department with only three theatres; scaled across an entire trust, the savings will most likely quadruple.
Enhancing Communication and Patient Safety
Beyond financial and environmental benefits, badge hats significantly improve communication in operating theatres, radiology, cath labs, and maternity. Traditionally, these teams wear identical disposable caps, making it difficult to identify colleagues during critical procedures. By incorporating name badges into reusable caps, staff can quickly and efficiently communicate, reducing errors and ensuring seamless coordination.
Key Benefits at a Glance
- Cost Savings: Lower long-term expenses compared to disposable caps.
- Environmental Benefits: Significantly reduced carbon footprint and waste.
- Improved Communication: Name badges enhance identification and teamwork.
- Better Patient Safety: Clearer staff identification reduces errors.
- Scalable for Greater Impact: Expanding across trusts multiplies benefits.
- Alignment with NHS Green Plan: Supporting broader sustainability goals.
- Proven Longevity: Reusable caps have proved to last four years and beyond.
This change is an opportunity for all healthcare trusts to embrace smarter and greener practices. Small adjustments like these pave the way for a more sustainable, cost-effective, and safer healthcare system for everyone.
