BMJ Future Surgery Conference, Central Laundering Milestone & NHS Updates

Dear colleagues and partners, we are thrilled to share highlights from a transformative month at Eco Ninjas — including our participation in the BMJ Future Surgery Conference and major progress in central laundering approvals.

BMJ Future Surgery Conference
A Platform for Innovation

Held on 6–7 November at Bishopsgate, London, this flagship event brought together healthcare professionals, innovators, and thought leaders to explore the future of surgery through the lenses of equity, sustainability, and digital transformation.

Theatre Badge Hats were shown to many NHS leaders and surgeons, who could see how the product could improve communication, safety, and patient connection in operating theatres. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with many recognising the advantages over disposable caps and generic embroidery.

Inclusive Design

A particularly meaningful moment came when several attendees with long braided hair tried on our braided badge hats. These women shared how difficult it had been to fit their hair comfortably into thin, paper disposable caps. They found our hats not only comfortable but also appreciated the inclusive design that considered diverse hair types — reinforcing the importance of designing for real-world needs.

Major Milestone
National Laundry Approval

Elis, Synergy, and Johnson & Johnson laundry services have all wash-tested and approved our badge hats for central laundering. This means:

No extra journeys — hats are collected and returned with hospital scrubs in net bags
Seamless integration into existing laundry workflows
A clear path to widespread NHS adoption
NHS Partnerships
Supporting MMUH Birmingham & Worcestershire

We are working closely with Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) to transition to badge hats. A recent cost analysis shows that switching from disposable to reusable badge hats, combined with a fully managed laundering service, can deliver savings over three years while reducing environmental impact.

We have also been working with Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and hope to implement our badge hats here over the next few months.

Global Collaboration
Podcast with Virginia Mason Institute

We are proud to announce a global podcast collaboration with the Virginia Mason Institute — an opportunity to share the origin and impact of Theatre Badge Hats. The idea began at Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry, where a theatre manager asked us to write a name on a disposable cap — a simple request that highlighted a key issue: name badges covered by sterile surgical gowns.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss your trust's specific requirements, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

We would be delighted to help.

Kind regards,
